The Acts of the Apostles records that the followers of Jesus were first called "Christians" in Antioch. St. Peter is believed to have preached to the first congregations in this very cave in the 1st century AD, making it one of the oldest churches in the world. The Vatican declared it a pilgrimage site in 1963.
